EdSubs Believes
Subtitles can be the next powerful tool in language learning.

Traditionally, subtitles are used for increasing accessibility and understanding non-native content. With the rise of global streaming, that's changed. Viewers everywhere are watching content in languages they don't speak, on platforms that cross every border. Subtitles are now used more than ever, and with the right design they can become a powerful supplement to formal language learning, giving learners personalized input that reinforces what they're studying in the classroom or with an instructor.

Standard Subtitles only in the audience's language
Dos Oruguitas standard subtitle
You are now miracles, breaking chrysalises
The viewer understands the translation but learns nothing of the source language. Spanish is invisible.
EdSubs Multi-language, color-coded, word-aligned
Dos Oruguitas EdSubs subtitle
Ya son milagros, rompiendo crisálidas
Already; are; miracles; breaking; chrysalises
You are now miracles, breaking chrysalises
Every Spanish word is visible, color-coded, and mapped word-for-word to English. The viewer learns while watching.
Our Approach
Grounded in Science

EdSubs is aligned with established linguistic research, applied to content you actually want to watch.

A
Source Language
The original language of the content, color-coded word by word so you can track each term across all four lines at once.
B
Transliteration
Phonetic romanization for non-Latin scripts (Korean, Japanese, Chinese, Arabic and more), color-matched to the source line so pronunciation and meaning connect naturally.
C
Word-for-Word Translation
A literal word-by-word translation that shows you how the sentence is built. Color-aligned to the source and transliteration lines above.
D
Colloquial Translation
A natural translation in your target language, the way a fluent speaker would actually say it rather than a word-for-word rendering.

Grounded in Krashen's Comprehensible Input Theory & Leipzig Glossing Methodology

Stephen Krashen's i+1 hypothesis holds that you acquire language when the comprehensible input you're exposed to is just a step beyond what you already know. EdSubs aligns closely with that thinking, not only by making more content comprehensible, but by ensuring each level removes one layer of support, keeping the learner in that productive zone as they improve. The four-line format draws from interlinear glossing, a technique linguists have used for centuries to align source text with translation line by line. The Max Planck Institute and Leipzig University codified the rules. We adapted them for video.

Five Levels of Scaffolding

Start with full support and remove scaffolding as you improve. The source language is always present because research shows it is essential for true acquisition, based on Krashen's i+1 comprehensible input theory.
